Decorating with natural materials

Stone, linen, rattan, clay — what each one does for a room, and how to keep them alive.
Natural materials age, and that is the point. Laminate looks the same on the day it is thrown away; travertine records every year of it.
Stone grounds. Put it low — floors, plinths, trays, a bowl — and let it be heavy. Linen and cotton soften everything above it. Rattan and cane add structure without weight, which is why they work so well in humid rooms.
Clay is the honest one. It holds the hand that made it, and it survives being used daily.
The only rule is to maintain them. Oil the teak, seal the stone, wash the linen properly. A material you are afraid to touch is not decor, it is a liability.
